lgo_mlb_baltimore_oriolesBaltimore almost made it all the way back from two seven-run deficits, but the O’s ended up coming up just short in a 9-8 loss to Detroit on Thursday at Camden Yards.

The Tigers led 7-0 and 9-2 before the Orioles started to make things interesting. A two-run Chris Davis homer, his 25th, brought Baltimore to within 9-4 in the sixth.

A Davis two-run single highlighted a three-run O’s seventh that cut the margin to 9-7. Manny Machado grounded out to short with runners on second and third and one down in the eighth, scoring Jonathan Schoop to make it 9-8.

But that was as close as Baltimore would get. Matt Wieters singled with two down in the bottom of the ninth to bring J.J. Hardy to the plate as the possible winning run, but Hardy grounded out to end it.

Miguel Gonzalez (9-7, 4.28 ERA) took the loss, giving up five runs on 10 hits in three and a third innings.

Alfredo Simon (10-6, 4.55 ERA) notched the win for Detroit, giving up four runs on two hits in five and two-thirds, striking out one and walking three.
