The unemployment rate in Virginia is likely to rise this year, from 3.5 percent to 4.4 percent, according to an economic forecast from the University of Virginia Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service.
The state is expected to lose nearly 12,000 jobs by July with some recovery possible in the fourth quarter. The hardest hit sectors for job losses were in government, professional services and accommodation and food service.
An event in Waynesboro next week will bring job seekers and employers together in one space. More than 25 employers will take part in the April 8 event at Waynesboro Public Library from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Some employers will offer interviews on the spot, according to AJ Young Jr., director of outreach for The Lifeworks Project, who is organizing the event for the fourth year in a row.
“Jobfest 26 is another example of The Lifeworks Project’s commitment to provide practical support to our community to uplift and thrive,” said Young. “The best way to predict the future is to create it.”
Those who attend should come dressed to interview and bring their resume.

There is some good news from the economic forecast mentioned above: the report projects that the unemployment rate will ease in 2027, when Virginia’s economy is predicted to rebound.
