Part of Route 42 in Alleghany County is scheduled to close during nighttime and overnight hours for approximately three weeks starting Monday, July 7.
The closures are for concrete deck repairs on the bridge over Buckingham Branch Railroad, just northwest of Morgan Drive in the Nicelytown area. The area is about 1.5 miles north of Interstate 64 exit 29.
The closures are from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday to Thursday nights through the night of Thursday, July 24. Emergency vehicles will be able to cross the bridge during the overnight closures.
All other traffic will be detoured as follows:
North of the bridge (Millboro Springs side), motorists will go north on Route 42 into Bath County, east on Route 39 (Maury River Road) in Rockbridge County, south on Route 11 (Lee Highway), west on I-64 into Alleghany County, and then take exit 29 to Route 42 and the end of the detour.
South of the bridge (I-64 side), motorists will go south on Route 42, east on I-64 into Rockbridge County to exit 55 (Lexington), north on Route 11 (Lee Highway), west on Route 39 (Maury River Road) into Bath County, and then south on Route 42 (Cowpasture River Highway) into Alleghany County and the end of the detour.
Temporary traffic signals remain in place on Route 42 at both ends of the railroad bridge. Other than the full closure hours, the signals will control traffic 24 hours a day, seven days a week through approximately September 1, 2025. Until the bridge work is completed, the portion of Route 42 will not be open to wide-load tractor trailers.
All work is weather permitting.
