vmi_logoRedshirt freshman quarterback Al Cobb has been named the starting quarterback for VMI’s 2014 season opener at Bucknell Saturday evening.

The two-deep for the Bucknell game was released Sunday by the VMI coaching staff.

Cobb, who had been competing for the starting job with redshirt sophomore Hayden Alford, will be the first VMI quarterback to make his college debut in a season opener since Jonathan Wilson took the opening snap against Navy in 2003.

Cobb completed 12 of 18 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns including a 65-yarder in VMI’s first preseason scrimmage August 12 and followed with an 11 of 20 outing for 76 yards and a touchdown August 18.

Cobb is a graduate of Giles County High School in Pulaski, Tenn. And was named District 12-AA MVP and was selected MVP for the West team in the East-West All-Star game. He threw for 2,860 yards and 34 touchdowns during his high school career.

The Keydets will kick the 2014 season off against Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa. at 6:00 pm Saturday night.
