UVA Football: Norfolk State hung around for a while in 31-10 loss at ODU

ODU got out to a 17-0 lead on Norfolk State, the Week 2 opponent on the UVA Football schedule, but the Spartans made things interesting there for a while, before the Monarchs pulled away for a 31-10 win.

QB Deljay Bailey had 58 sack-adjusted rushing yards on 15 attempts – he was also sacked five times.

Going to need to account for him on designed runs – Bailey had 45 yards on 10 designed running plays.

The QB was 14-of-20 for 94 yards and an INT through the air.

The play-calling kept things pretty basic there: 13 of his 20 pass attempts were either screens (6-of-7, 9 yards) or under 10 yards from the line of scrimmage (6-of-6, 53 yards).

Tailback Jalyn Daniels had 84 yards on 11 rushing attempts.

This team can run the ball, at least against the likes of ODU.

Gotta give their D credit: the ODU offense finished with a pedestrian 319 total yards.

Area of weakness: rushing defense.

The Monarchs had 199 sack-adjusted rushing yards, and averaged 5.0 yards per attempt.

We were already expecting Des Kitchings to want to pound the defensive front in his game plan.
