Weather experts are watching two tropical systems that may impact the East Coast, and parts of Virginia, over the weekend or early next week.
One tropical development is moving across Puerto Rico and could become a tropical storm or depression near the Bahamas on Friday.
There is also a second tropical feature east of the Caribbean; the tropical wave will move northeast over the open Atlantic and could become a tropical depression or storm on Friday or over the weekend.
“The path of these features and future intensity is kind of a question mark right now,” said Tom Kines, senior meteorologist with AccuWeather. “They will be competing with each other.”
Kines said that the odds are that the feature currently east of the Caribbean will stay far enough east of the U.S. to not affect East Coast weather, but forecasters are watching the feature.
“The depression or storm that moves across the Bahamas this weekend could be a factor for southeast Virginia,” Kines said. “If it becomes a tropical storm there certainly could be wind and rain for that area on Monday.”
This storm also has uncertainty and may be far enough east to have little impact on weather in Virginia.
“One thing we feel confident on is there will be rough surf, strong rip currents and perhaps coastal flooding at the beaches on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday regardless of the actual weather,” Kines said.
AccuWeather hurricane experts say there is a medium risk of tropical rain or wind impacts from South Florida to Virginia Beach from Sunday through next Wednesday.

The next two names on the list of 2025 Atlantic hurricanes are Humberto and Imelda.
The AccuWeather Atlantic Hurricane Season Forecast predicts 13-16 named storms and six to nine hurricanes. The forecast also predicts three to six direct impacts on the U.S. this hurricane season.
People along the East Coast, including Virginia, should monitor forecast updates closely through the weekend.
