When two voices join to make music, we celebrate. When a mother and daughter join to sing jazz, we rejoice. When it is Stephanie Nakasian and her daughter Veronica O’Brien, we are over the moon. The dynamic duo with Bob Hallahan on piano will serve up a magical evening as part of the Custin Jazz Series at WTA’s Gateway on Friday, May 31 at 8 pm.
Stephanie Nakasian charmed the Gateway audience when she performed at the Gateway with the Hod O’Brien Trio. There were immediate calls for her return for another evening of inspired jazz. “I’m so glad to be returning,” says Stephanie. “We had a fun night with the great American songbook earlier this year.” And she adds, “Now that my daughter is home from her first year at the University of Miami, we can get to do our duo act again. Can’t wait!”
Veronica O’Brien is following in the footsteps of her parents who are internationally recognized jazz artists. Although Veronica has just finished her freshman year at the University of Miami where she is on a full scholarship at the Frost School of Music, she is already racking up the credits as a performer. Just before returning to Virginia for the night at WTA’s Gateway, she will perform a weekend engagement at the Kitano club in New York City. As her mother says, “She is officially a ‘pro’.”
Because her husband, Hod O’Brien, was called early to perform his concerts in Japan, Stephanie turned to one of Central Virginian’s best jazz pianist, Bob Hallahan, to accompany the dynamic duo’s evening of song.
The Custin Jazz series is supported by a grant from Jean Custin in memory of her brother’s long running jazz festival. The Custin Series brings regional and national jazz artists to local audiences at a most affordable price.
