#24 JMU women’s soccer drops 1-0 decision to Navy

jmu logoThe 24th-ranked James Madison women’s soccer team suffered a 1-0 defeat Friday night against Navy for its first loss of the season.

The lone goal of the match came in the 27th minute when Clare MacAdam put her second goal of the season past redshirt junior goalkeeper Ellen Forrest (Midlothian, Va./James River). After a pass was sent to the left post, Navy’s Kelty Caprice played the ball back into the middle of the box for MacAdam who put the shot away in the top left corner of goal.

Throughout the match, JMU took 13 shots while Navy fired 12. Only three of those 13 shots were on target, though, as the Dukes failed to break the shutout and tie the game at 1-1.
JMU’s best chance to score came in the 75th minute when sophomore forward Ashley Herndon (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) had time to wind up from the right side of the box. Hitting the ball with a strong right-footed strike, her shot whistled just over the cross bar for a goal kick.
Overall, Herndon took five of JMU’s 13 shots, but only one was on goal.

Though giving up the goal in the 27th minute, Forrest made a season-high six saves in the game. She and the JMU back line have now allowed one goal in each game through the first four contests of the 2014 season.

JMU returns to action Sunday night, Sept. 7, with a 7 p.m. match at University Park against in-state rival VCU. The Rams come into the match riding high off their first win of the season on Friday night, a 1-0 win at home against fellow CAA opponent Drexel.
