Sophomore Amy Roguski (Sykesville, Md./Liberty) scored two goals in the final 2:22 to lift No. 13 James Madison over Virginia Tech, 10-7 in women’s lacrosse Wednesday afternoon at the JMU Lacrosse Complex.
Senior Caitlin McHugh (Westminster, Md./Mercy) notched her first goal of the season just under seven minutes into the first half to put the Dukes on the board first and JMU never looked back. Senior Ariel Lane (Vero Beach , Fla./Vero Beach) extended the lead to two less than four minutes later before senior Morgan Widlake got the scoring started for the Hokies to make it a 2-1 JMU margin.
JMU picked up two more goals in the first half to make it 4-1 when Virginia Tech’s senior Shannon Bone (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) scored with 3:36 remaining in the half to make it 4-2, which was the halftime advantage for Madison.
Fifteen seconds into the second half, the Dukes made it 5-2 on redshirt junior Casey Ancarrow’s (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll) sixth goal of the season. The Hokies came within one twice, scoring two goals in 1:43 to make it a 5-4 JMU lead with 22:56 remaining.
Madison scored three unanswered goals for its largest lead of the game at 8-4 before Tech rebounded on a man-up goal by senior Jessica Nonn (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) and an even-strength goal by Widlake to cut the Dukes’ lead to 8-6 with 5:35 to play. At that point, the game was delayed almost 40 minutes for lightning.
After returning to action, the Hokies scored again, 80 seconds after the lightning delay, to trim the purple and gold’s lead back to one at 8-7 with 4:15 left in regulation. Roguski countered for JMU, scoring two goals in the final 2:22, the last with only five seconds remaining, to secure the JMU victory.
Ancarrow led all players with three points, all coming off goals, bringing her season total to 10 while the Dukes had seven different players score.
Widlake led the Hokies with two goals and Jessica Nonn also added a goal and an assist for Virginia Tech.
JMU returns to action on Sunday, March 4 when the No. 13 Dukes go on the road to take on Fairfield in a 1 p.m. matchup.
