#1 UVa. baseball hosts #22 Liberty Wednesday night


uva-logo-new2The No. 1-ranked UVa. baseball returns from its week-long break for final exams Wednesday (May 7) with a midweek game against No. 22 Liberty. Game time is 6 p.m. at Davenport Field.

WINA 1070-AM and WINA.com will carry the live radio broadcast. A video broadcast will be available online on VirginiaSports.com through a Cavaliers Live subscription. A link to live stats (GameTracker) also is available on VirginiaSports.com.

The video broadcast and live stats also can be accessed through the Virginia Sports app, which is available through iTunes.

Wednesday is Military Appreciation Day. UVa will be wearing special uniforms for the game, and there will be recognitions of Wounded Warriors and UVa student-athletes who are involved with the ROTC program. Fans also will have an opportunity to sign a banner in support of troops stationed overseas.

Reserved bleacher seats: $6 (general public), $5 (UVa faculty/staff – limit two with valid university ID)
General Admission tickets: $5 (adults), $4 (youth -18 and under, seniors – 60 and over, and UVa faculty/staff – limit two with valid university ID)
Groups (20+): $5 each (Reserved bleacher seats), $4 each (General Admission)

Reserved bleacher tickets offer seating in sections A-G. General Admission seating is located in the left and right field bleachers (sections H-R) and on the grassy hillside.

Odds and Ends
Virginia ranks second nationally in fielding (.983) and seventh in ERA (2.27).
Virginia is 4-6 in its first game back from the exam break since 2004.
• UVa is 102-17-1 against in-state opponents since 2004 (12-2 this year).
• UVa has hit 11 home runs in the last nine games (13 in first 37 games).
• UVa is 11-3 in one-run games, including 9-2 in ACC play.
• Nineteen of the Cavaliers’ 37 wins have come when scoring five runs or fewer.

Virginia-Liberty Series
Virginia owns a 31-20-1 edge in its series with Liberty. The Cavaliers downed Liberty twice last year, 7-2, on March 13 and 2-0 on April 2 in Lynchburg.

UVa has won 10 of its last 11 games against Liberty. The Flames ended an eight-game losing streak to Virginia in 2012 with an 8-0 win at Davenport Field.

Rare Midweek Game against Ranked Foe
Ranked No. 22 this week by Baseball America, Liberty is the first top-25 team to visit Davenport Field for a midweek game in four years. Another member of the Big South Conference, then-No. 10 Coastal Carolina, came to Charlottesville on Tuesday, April 27, 2010; UVa, ranked No. 1 at the time, won the game by a 6-3 count.

Top Pitching Staffs Set to Collide
The Wednesday matchup puts two of the nation’s premier pitching staffs on display. UVa ranks seventh nationally in ERA (2.27), while Liberty is 11th (2.37). Batters are hitting .199 against UVa pitchers and .219 versus Liberty hurlers; UVa is second nationally and Liberty fifth in that category.

Noting Liberty
Liberty holds a 35-10 record, including a 19-1 mark in the Big South Conference. Ryan Seiz anchors the Flames’ offense and leads the team in batting (.392), hits (69), doubles (15) and homers (11). Dalton Britt is batting .329, while Alex Close stands at .329. The Flames also are a solid fielding team, with a .972 fielding percentage.

Up Next
Virginia remains home Friday through Sunday (May 9-11) with its final home ACC series against Georgia Tech; the Cavaliers will hold Senior Day ceremonies at 11:40 a.m. Sunday prior to the noon game.

UVa takes on VCU on May 13 in its last regular-season home game before finishing the ACC and regular-season schedules May 15-17 at Wake Forest.
