A close friend of Virginia’s Revolutionary War heroes Patrick Henry and George Washington, Catharine “Kitty” Littlefield Greene, was known as a vivacious flirt who could be brutally honest. On September 11, award-winning author Pamela Bauer Mueller will speak to the Augusta County Historical Society on the remarkable Kitty Greene – wife, mother, diplomat, manager, and maybe co-inventor of the cotton-gin.
Mueller, author of Lady Unveiled, a novel about Kitty Greene and her times, will speak to the ACHS and the public 7 p.m. Thursday, September 11, in the R. R. Smith Center for History & Art (2nd floor Lecture Room). The event is free to ACHS members and $5 for non-members. Student admission is $1.
Lady Unveiled was released earlier this year and is the newest of Mueller’s five national award-winning historical novels, novels showcasing women of significance in American history.
Kitty Green, the heroine of this latest novel, was a very real historical person who not only was friends with some Founding Fathers, she spoke fluent French with another friend, the Marquis de Lafayette, and married the innovative and important Revolutionary general Nathanael Greene. She became a confidante of Martha Washington, and was an accomplished manager of a rice plantation in Georgia.
The award-winning Mueller based her new book on meticulous research and will speak to the ACHS in September on the life and times of this strong American woman.
The ACHS was founded in 1964 to study, collect, preserve, publish, educate about, and promote the history of Augusta County and its communities. The society is marking its 50th year in 2014 with special events and presentations. More information is available online at www.augustacountyhs.org.
