Valley libraries embrace new checkout system

Chris Graham

newspaperValley Libraries Connection, consisting of Waynesboro Public Library, Augusta County Library and Staunton Public Library, have chosen 3M RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) Systems to enhance productivity in their libraries. They are the first library system within an 80-mile radius to implement this technology.

An RIFD checkout system allows for quicker turn-around at the circulation desk, better collection management, and enhanced security. As of the middle of August, the system was live at WPL and at ACL. SPL will finish the conversion to RFID later this year.

The conversion project began in April at Waynesboro and in May at Augusta.  In one month, each library was able to tag all materials with an RFID label using a 3M Conversion Station. The key to converting collections ranging from approximately 150,000 to 180,000 items was the work of a team of staff and many volunteers.

At WPL, the current 3M SelfCheck System was also upgraded to incorporate RFID and a second 3M SelfCheck System was added in the children’s department. The two 3M SelfCheck Systems at Augusta were replaced and Staunton will be switching to a 3M SelfCheck System on each floor. Detection systems were installed at all library entrances.

With 601,133 visits and a total circulation of 1,256,039 items in the last fiscal year, Valley Libraries Connection is ready to take service to the next level. The use of RFID will help the consortium achieve the goal of promoting lifelong learning, discovery and enrichment through a broad spectrum of materials, technologies and experiences. Serving diverse populations, the libraries facilitate access to information, the exchange of ideas, and the building of community.
