Update: 2:07 p.m. Manassas Police have confirmed the deaths of two people who were shot early Wednesday by a Charlotte man who later died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Augusta County.
Richard Lamont, 48, and Christopher Serrano, 33, died as a result of injuries in the 7:11 a.m. shooting at a business in Manassas.
Police reported in a release that a third shooting victim is in stable condition at a Northern Virginia area hospital.
The suspect, Marvin Grant, 37, of Charlotte, who, like his victims, was an employee of United Rentals in Manassas, fled the scene.
Investigators in Manassas tracked Grant’s phone to a location in Harrisonburg, and notified Virginia State Police, which was able to track Grant down in his vehicle on Interstate 81 southbound in Augusta County.
Update: Wednesday, 1:30 p.m. Virginia State Police are confirming the death by self-inflicted gunshot wound of a suspect in a Northern Virginia workplace shooting on Wednesday.
Marvin Grant, 37, of Charlotte, fled the scene of the 7:14 a.m. shooting in Manassas.
A release from VSP tells us that troopers were alerted that Grant may be in Rockingham County, and a trooper, per the report, spotted the suspect’s vehicle on Interstate 81 southbound near the 235 mile marker in Augusta County.
The suspect vehicle pulled into the rest area at the 232 mile marker, where troopers attempted a traffic stop.
Grant exited his vehicle, then returned to his vehicle, and continued driving southbound on Interstate 81.
Troopers initiated a pursuit in response.
At the 227 mile marker, Grant pulled over on the side of the interstate and exited the vehicle with a firearm pointed at his head.
A VSP tactical team and a negotiator were brought to the scene, according to the report from State Police.
At 10:30 a.m., Grant suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
He was taken to Augusta Health, where he was pronounced deceased.
There was no use of force by Virginia State Police, per the report.
First report: Wednesday, 12:41 p.m. We’re following reports about a workplace shooting in Northern Virginia on Wednesday morning in which the alleged perp may have ended up in Augusta County.
There were reports on social media dating back to around 9:30 a.m. about heightened police activity in the Mount Crawford area, not far from the Rockingham County-Augusta County line, and then reports over the next hour or so about the focus of law enforcement being on Interstate 81 in Augusta County, in the area of the exit ramp at mile marker 227 in Verona.
A post on Bluesky from Danica Roem, a state senator from Northern Virginia, offered up the first quasi-official speculation about the local police activity being connected to the shooting at a United Rental facility in Manassas, in which three people were critically injured, according to published reports.
The shooting was reported at 7:14 a.m., which fits the timeline for a possible escape route from Manassas using Interstate 66 to cross Northern Virginia east-to-west, then heading south down Interstate 81.
The suspect has been identified as Marvin Grant, 37, who local police in Northern Virginia said left the scene of the shooting in a gray Toyota Corolla or Camry with temporary North Carolina tags.
