Dick Woods Road bridge in Ivy closes Jan. 26

road-work-headerNext Monday, Jan. 26, the Virginia Department of Transportation and Fairfield-Echols LLC of Fishersville will begin work to replace the Route 637 (Dick Woods Road) bridge over Ivy Creek in Albemarle County, weather permitting. The bridge is located one half-mile south of Route 250 (Ivy Road).

The project involves replacing the bridge with a single-span pre-stressed concrete slab structure. The new bridge will meet current design standards and will be capable of carrying all legal loads.

Due to its significantly deteriorated condition, the former Route 637 bridge was replaced in September 2012 with a temporary structure until the permanent replacement project could be completed. The temporary bridge will be put to use in another location once it is removed.

VDOT will close Route 637 to through traffic during construction, which is projected to last four months. Traffic will use Route 250 and Route 677 (Bloomfield Road) as the detour route. Motorists should expect the detour to remain in place through Aug. 4, the project’s completion date.

A 2013 count shows that Route 637 carries 1,200 vehicles per day.

Fairfield-Echols LLC, with the low bid of $683,018.10, was awarded the construction contract for the Route 637 bridge project in November. More information can be found on VDOT’s website at www.virginiadot.org/projects/culpeper/rt637bridge.asp.
