JMU basketball coach Matt Brady announced the signing of Kevin Roland (Amelia Court House, Va./Amelia Academy) to a National Letter of Intent for the 2015-16 season.
Roland, a 6-foot-2-inch guard, is originally from the West African nation of Benin, but relocated to the United States more than a year ago and began playing prep basketball at Amelia Academy in Amelia Court House, Va.
In his first season with the Patriots, he was a Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) Division III First Team All-State honoree after leading the team with 25.0 points per game on 60.5-percent shooting (290-479). He also averaged 9.0 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 3.1 steals and 1.0 block per outing. He also made 40 3-pointers and 156 free throws in his 31 games played.
Amelia Academy, led by Head Coach Quinton Aldridge, finished the year 24-7 overall, advanced to the VISAA State quarterfinals and won the Virginia Commonwealth Conference title after going 13-1 in league play.
Roland was originally in the Class of 2016 but was recently reclassified to 2015, allowing him to sign an NLI with the Dukes for next season. He was also a member of the Boo Williams AAU travel squad last season. At a college elite camp this past summer, Roland recorded a 41-inch no-step vertical leap.
JMU opens the 2014-15 regular season Friday night at 7 p.m. when it takes on No. 9 Virginia at the JMU Convocation Center.
