The UVA Football program apparently updated its depth chart for Saturday’s game with Delaware between the time the PR folks handed out a printed copy to the media on hand for Tony Elliott’s Tuesday press conference and just now, when I accessed the depth chart online at 5:30 p.m.
The earlier one, from what I saw from a reporter posting to Twitter, had Jason Hammond listed as #1 at defensive tackle; the one I’m seeing right now doesn’t have Hammonds on it at all.
Which makes more sense, because we know that Elliott said this time last week that Hammond was set to undergo surgery on his left elbow.
The update helps me feel better about the fact that Noah Josey is listed as #1 at left guard, given that Josey left the 38-27 loss to West Virginia on Saturday night after 20 snaps with an ankle injury.
Elliott told reporters on Tuesday that Josey didn’t practice on Monday, but was expected back today, “so, hopeful for this weekend.”
“Grateful that I don’t believe it’s as severe, but he wasn’t able to finish in the game. But since then, through treatment, you know, he’s got mobility, and he’s moving around,” Elliott said.
You want Josey out there – the sixth-year player has amassed 3,046 career snaps dating back to 2021, allowing six sacks and 46 QB pressures on 1,617 pass dropbacks, for a pass-block success rate of 98.0 percent, per data from Pro Football Focus.
The guy listed as the #2 at left guard is Cole Surber, though when Josey went down on Saturday night, it was Ben York, who is listed as the backup at left tackle, who took his place.
York was on the field for the other 55 offensive snaps on Saturday night, getting dinged for allowing two QB pressures and getting a 55.7 grade from PFF.
Surber got six snaps in the NC State game and 22 snaps in the Norfolk State game – basically, getting on the field in both after the outcomes of the games had already been decided.
