Cuccinelli: No charges against Patrick Moran in election fraud case

AFP

newspaper-headerAttorney General Ken Cuccinelli said Friday that his office had concluded the investigation of election offense allegations against Patrick Moran without bringing any charges.

“After a thorough investigation, we have concluded that, while Mr. Moran’s behavior was inappropriate, it was not criminal,” Cuccinelli said. “However, election fraud is a serious matter. Securing our elections and protecting against voter fraud are critical components in preserving our representative democracy and the election process as a whole. My office will continue its work to allow all voters to feel secure that their votes count and are not diluted by others committing fraud.”

The attorney general’s office had worked in collaboration with the Arlington County Police Department and the Arlington County commonwealth’s attorney to investigate this matter. A criminal investigation was initiated by the Arlington County Police Department in late October 2012 after a video was released allegedly depicting Patrick Moran, former director of field operations for the Jim Moran for Congress campaign organization, assisting another to vote illegally.

Patrick Moran and the Jim Moran for Congress campaign provided full cooperation throughout the investigation. Despite repeated attempts to involve the party responsible for producing the video, he failed to provide any assistance.
