Media Beat: Big news about a giant tomato plant dominates the headlines

I’m sorry, but, gotta point this out – the lead story on the News Leader website all day today has been about a giant tomato plant.

Actually, three of the top four stories on the front page of the site are about this tomato plant.

Now, not saying that there’s anything wrong with the story at all – there’s always room for a cute story about an oversized fruit or vegetable.

So what if the big-city news industry folks look down their noses at small-town journos by pointing out that all we seem to write about is some guy with a big tomato plant in his backyard, like there’s not real news for us out here in the hinterlands.

There is actual news for those of us journo types to be reporting on today; maybe the features writer who gets to do the fun stories is the only one on the desk.

Ergo, the top news is the tomato plant.

I guess the teen influencer and her twin friends weren’t available to drink a smoothie on camera today.

That one will be the top story for the weekend.
