The Tess Majors Foundation, a project near and dear to our hearts here at AFP, and the Devine-Majors Foundation are partnering to help a local nonprofit expand its signature summer day camp program for children and adults with disabilities and at-risk youth.
The two foundations have committed $200,000 toward a project at Creative Works Farm in Augusta County to build a dining hall that will provide an accessible gathering space for meals, activities, social events and educational programs.
The foundations are also asking the community to match their $200,000 gift through additional charitable giving to assist with the project, which, upon completion, will allow Creative Works Farm to expand programming beyond the traditional summer camp experience.
“This is about so much more than a building,” said Kelly Truxell, director at Creative Works Farm. “This dining hall will give us the space to create more opportunities for people with disabilities to learn, socialize, develop new skills and simply belong. We are incredibly grateful to the Tess Majors Foundation and Devine Majors Foundation for making this investment in our vision and challenging our community to be part of it.”
Plans include adaptive culinary classes, arts programs, social gatherings, family activities and other educational and recreational opportunities throughout the year.
For Camp LIGHT’s campers — children and adults with disabilities ranging from age 6 through adulthood — the impact can be significant.
“Many of the activities that most people take for granted simply aren’t readily available to individuals with disabilities,” Truxell said. “Camp LIGHT is a place where people don’t have to wonder whether they can participate. We want to be able to say, Yes, we have a place for you.”
