Perriello campaign scores political point with jab at McGuire over Trump convention

The Tom Perriello campaign sent out a release this morning poking at John McGuire for paying $25K to sit in the nose-bleeds at the Trump midterm convention in Dallas last night.

Meanwhile, the news, such as it is, from the Perriello campaign yesterday was the release of a TV ad and his appearance in front of a relative few people at an event at a senior center in Charlottesville.

Advantage: push.

“This is just pitiful. Congressman McGuire is so scared of facing local seniors that he would rather burn $25,000 for nose-bleed seats in Texas than take a few questions from the people he is paid to represent,” Perriello said in a statement from his campaign about a forum held at The Center at Belvedere, where the organizers had also invited McGuire to attend.

McGuire should have been there, no doubt – he may or may not have seen more people than he ended up encountering at the convention, for which thousands of people showed up dressed as empty seats.

Speaking of empty seats: the forum organizers left an empty seat out for McGuire, to highlight his absence.

Neat trick, but that’s all it is.

“Folks of every political stripe are fed up with McGuire caring more about his ticket to the next Trump rally than whether he can show his face around here. He stopped working for the people of this district a long time ago, and his travel priorities show that,” Perriello said in the statement.

Perriello isn’t wrong, but nothing about what he had to say here is going to persuade a past McGuire voter to flip, or get a person on the fence about even voting in the midterms to cast an early ballot or show up on Nov. 3.

But, sure, the chattering class, they love this stuff.
