Fifth-ranked Virginia got a goal in OT from Mia Abello to collect the win in its season opener at Penn State on Friday, 4-3.

Abello ended the contest with a goal off a penalty corner just over five minutes into the extra frame with helpers from Mary Adams and Emma Watchilla.

UVA got on the board in the opening minute on an unassisted goal from Rylee Dennis, and extended the lead to 3-0 and scores from Riley Savage (19:52) and Livvy Barker (32:51).

Penn State got back into it with three goals in a five-minute stretch in the fourth quarter, the equalizer coming on a goal by Chloe Dhage at the 54:28 mark.

We controlled the game well and should have scored a couple of goals more before we lost control for five minutes in the fourth quarter,” Virginia coach Ole Keugsen said. “We are a young team that will learn from this and how to close out games. I’m proud of our character to find a way in OT.”
