New details released in shooting death of Mathews County Commonwealth’s Attorney

Virginia State Police has released new details in the shooting death of Mathews County Commonwealth’s Attorney Tina Marie Walls who was found dead on Tuesday.

State Police, who are conducting the death investigation, said this morning that Walls suffered an apparent gunshot wound in the driveway of her residence.

Investigators believe the incident occurred some time between 7:15 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. in the 4500 block of New Point Comfort Highway in Mathews County.

“At this point in the investigation, there is no indication a suspect is involved,” the VSP update stated.

Walls was chosen as the Mathews County Commonwealth’s Attorney in the Nov. 7, 2023, election. She was a lifelong resident of Virginia, growing up in Williamsburg. She worked as a legal aid attorney on the Eastern Shore and was a former prosecutor in Suffolk. She also previously served as the executive director of a child abuse program at the Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters, or CHKD.

The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Chesapeake Field Office is conducting the death investigation at the request of the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office.

Her death remains an open and active investigation, according to VSP.
