The 10th and Page Neighborhood Association is hosting a community meeting with the head of Stony Point Development on Wednesday to discuss the proposed expansion of Dairy Market, which residents fear will be a negative for their neighborhood.
The meeting will be held at the Jefferson School on Fourth Street with a 6 p.m. start time.
“The proposed development will have a massive negative impact on our neighborhood unless it is scaled way back,” long-time resident James Bryant said. “Elders in the neighborhood need the nearby laundromat, children need safe streets and the neighborhood overall needs affordability, not displacement. We are not willing to take crumbs from developers, we need respect.”
The proposed expansion of Dairy Market, currently located on Grady Avenue, would stretch to the south side of Preston Avenue, adding approximately 400 units, including a hotel and additional apartments.
The 10th and Page Neighborhood Association sent a letter to developer Chris Henry last month noting their concerns about what he has in the works.
“Developers need to be responsive to residents’ input,” said Vizena Howard, the long-time president of the 10th and Page Neighborhood Association and a leader of the Charlottesville Low-Income Housing Coalition.
