Wintry weather may have played a factor in a fatal four-vehicle accident that occurred on Sunday morning on Interstate 77 northbound in Carroll County.

Dylan M. Hammond, 26, of Columbus, Ohio, died at the scene, according to Virginia State Police.

The crash occurred at 5:07 a.m. at the eight mile marker.

According to police, a pickup truck travelling northbound in the left lane on the interstate struck the back of a nearby tractor trailer. The pickup truck then ran off of the left side of the interstate into the median.

Shortly after this crash, a Tesla driven by Hammond struck a second tractor trailer when he changed from the left lane to the right lane.  The Tesla then came back into the left lane and struck the first tractor trailer.

The crash remains under investigation.
