A burn ban has been issued in the City of Waynesboro that remains in effect until further notice.
The ongoing dry and windy conditions in the Central Shenandoah Valley pose a risk for rapid fire growth within the city.
There have been several large wildland fires and smaller vegetation fires occurring within the region.
The burn ban comes out of an abundance of caution after the National Weather Service issued a special weather statement due to the ongoing risk for the spread of fire.
Residents and visitors are asked to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches and other flammable items. Exercise caution if using any equipment that could cause sparks, and keep all vehicles off dry grass.
This open burning ban includes any cooking fires with an open flame such as wood burning grills, outdoor fire pits and camp fires.
Enclosed charcoal grills, gas grills, and pellet stoves are exempt from this ban.
A violation may result in the issuance of a notice of violation or summons.
