Mailbag: Examining the weird GOTV letters we got from the Center for Voter Information

My wife and I each got creepy letters today from an outfit calling itself Center for Voter Information, which, turns out, is a left-of-center group.

I don’t care if they’re on my side. They need to stay the hell away from me.

“In an effort to promote election participation,” the letters began, “we’re sending this mailing to you and your neighbors to share who does and does not vote. While we have hidden the name and street number of your neighbors to protect their privacy, these are their true voting records.”

What followed was a history of votes in the 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 general elections, with the top line in each of our letters being either me or my wife, and then the next two purportedly reflecting the voting histories of neighbors on our street.

The letters were signed by Tom Lopach, the president of this Center for Voter Information, whose bio tells us is a former Democratic staffer in DC, and served a term as executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee during the 2015-2016 cycle.

Whatever they spent on this mailer, consider it not effective.

Whoever thought this was a good idea, you were wrong.
