The Alzheimer’s Association is planning to honor those affected by the disease through a poignant ceremony and walk on Oct. 4 in Fishersville.

The annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s – Greater Augusta will be held at Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences-Mary Baldwin University at 10 a.m. The ceremony will take place prior to the walk at 9:45 a.m.

During the ceremony, walkers will carry flowers of various colors, each color representing their personal connection to the disease.

“This is a pivotal moment in the fight against Alzheimer’s. There are now treatments that can change the course of the disease,” said Jeanne Snyder, community executive director of the Alzheimer’s Association Central and Western Virginia.

In Virginia, there are more than 165,000 people living with the disease and 346,000 caregivers.

Additional walks are planned for:

  • Oct. 18 in Roanoke
  • Oct. 25 in Lynchburg and Danville
  • Oct. 26 in Charlottesville
  • Nov. 1 in Harrisonburg
  • Nov. 2 in the New River Valley

To date, the top fundraising teams for the regional walks are Sigma Kappa Delta Rho at James Madison University and Sigma Kappa Theta Zeta in Charlottesville.
