We finally have the reason for a shelter-in-place order put in effect overnight in Albemarle County.
It was related to a shooting on 1st Street South in Charlottesville late Monday night, which led to a police pursuit that ended in the 3000 block of Scottsville Road in Albemarle County.
The shooting was observed by Charlottesville PD officers conducting foot patrols in the area at 10:22 p.m., according to a press release from Albemarle County Police.
While responding, CPD officers observed a vehicle that had reported stolen earlier in the day fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed.
The vehicle failed to yield to officers and continued at a high rate of speed down Avon Street before ultimately crashing in Albemarle County.
Responding officers located a 14-year-old male suffering from non-life-threatening injuries sustained in the crash.
Two additional male juveniles were observed fleeing from the vehicle.
An AR-style rifle was recovered from inside, and 49 cartridge casings were collected from the shooting on 1st Street South.
Overnight, the Albemarle County PD sent out a news alert indicating that the 3400 block of Scottsville Road had been closed from Hillsdale Farm to Thorn Rose Lane, and that residents within a two-mile radius were being asked to shelter in place until further notice.
The timestamp on the alert was 12:29 a.m. Tuesday.
A second alert, sent at 2:02 a.m., noted that the shelter-in-place had been lifted.
At 10:30 a.m., a homeowner in the 3800 block of Scottsville Road provided law enforcement with home surveillance footage that showed one of the two still-at-large suspects still in the area.
ACPD and CPD continued search efforts in this area with assistance from University of Virginia Police, Louisa County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police.
At 3:45 p.m., ACPD officers engaged in a foot pursuit with the second suspect, who brandished a firearm at officers before being taken into custody with the assistance of a K-9.
The suspect, a 15-year-old male, was charged by ACPD with underage possession of a firearm and brandishing a firearm. He is being held at the Blue Ridge Juvenile Detention Center.
The third juvenile suspect who fled the crash scene has not yet been located.
At this time, investigators do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community.
