Two Virginians woke up Thursday morning as millionaires, after two winning tickets were sold in the Powerball lottery in Spotsylvania and Carrollton.
As the Barenaked Ladies tune goes, the winner might buy a house, a nice automobile, a tree fort in your yard, an exotic pet, maybe a monkey, and even some art, a Picasso or a Garfunkel. They might even buy a zero-turn lawn mower that a recent lottery winner said they planned to splurge on.
The Northern Virginia winning ticket is worth $2 million; and the Hampton Roads/Isle of Wight County ticket won $1 million, according to Virginia Lottery officials.
While they are not new millionaires, three additional tickets sold in Virginia are also worth a not-too-shabby $50,000 each. I mean, you can almost buy a new Jeep or Bronco with that kind of dough, almost, but more likely after taxes, buy a solid Hyundai or Toyota at the very least.
The winning numbers in Wednesday night’s drawing were 9-12-22-41-61, and the Powerball number was 25. Two additional tickets sold in Arizona and New York won $1 million, and two additional tickets sold in Mississippi and Ohio won $2 million each.
Despite the wins in the Commonwealth and other states, no one matched all six numbers to win the Powerball game meaning the jackpot continues to grow.
I mean, being a millionaire is cool and all, but what could you buy with a billion dollars? I’m not sure there is a song for that one.
The jackpot is currently estimated just shy of $1 billion at $950 million for Saturday night’s drawing.
This is the sixth-largest prize in the game’s history.
Powerball tickets may be purchased at any of more than 5,300 Virginia Lottery retailers statewide or online at valottery.com.
Powerball drawings are held at 10:59 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The three tickets that each won $50,000 were bought at:
- Royal Farms, 1221 Warrenton Road, Fredericksburg
- Shell, 5533 Backlick Road, Springfield
- Online, by an Alexandria resident
