Looks like we have our next chair of the Virginia Democratic Party: State Sen. Lamont Bagby has announced his interest in the post, and he has just about everybody on his side
“Now more than ever, Virginia Democrats need to be united in our mission to retake the Governor’s Mansion, expand our House majority, and push back on the extreme, chaotic agenda we are seeing across the river in Washington. I am committed to being a highly active and intentionally collaborative chair, working with the Central Committee, local committees, elected officials and candidates to ensure Democratic victories up and down the ballot,” said Bagby, the chair of the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus.
The job is now open, with long-time chair Susan Swecker announcing this week that she plans to step down after 10 years in the post.
Swecker will formally step down on March 22, with the party’s State Central Committee, already scheduled to meet that day, electing her successor.
Among the people endorsing Bagby for the job are the state’s two U.S. senators, Tim Kaine and Mark Warner; two sitting congressmen, Bobby Scott and Suhas Subramanyam; the presumptive nominee for governor, Abigail Spanberger; the Speaker of the House of Delegates, Don Scott; the two top State Senate Democrats, Louise Lucas and Scott Surovell; and former gubernatorial nominee Creigh Deeds.
Seems pretty much settled already to me.
Bagby, 48, is in his first full term in the State Senate, representing a district that includes Richmond and a portion of Henrico County.
He previously served four terms in the House of Delegates, and was a member of the Henrico County School Board for seven years.
Prior to his political career, Bagby was a teacher and administrator at his alma mater, Henrico High School.
