UVA Football coach Tony Elliott picked up a nice speed option at wide receiver from the transfer portal on Monday, in the form of Cam Ross, late of JMU.
Ross will be a (gulp!) seventh-year senior in the fall. He was at UConn for five years, starting back (way back) in 2019, before transferring to JMU ahead of the 2024 season.
At JMU in 2024, Ross had 36 catches on 63 targets for 436 yards, a 12.1 yards-per-catch average, with three TDs.
Ross will also contribute on special teams: he averaged 29.9 yards on kick returns, with a 94-yard TD, and he was used on the punt-return unit at UConn.
How Cam Ross fits at WR
Ross was used at wideout on 61.9 percent of his snaps and in the slot on the other 38.1 percent.
I would see him used more in the slot at Virginia, which is losing its primary slot receiver, Chris Tyree (24 catches/38 targets, 136 yards, 5.7 yards per catch in 2024), to end of eligibility.
The other big portal get at wide receiver, Jahmal Edrine, late of Purdue, was used primarily at wideout in 2024 (88.9 percent of his snaps).
The WR room returns Trell Harris (15 catches/25 targets, 221 yards, 14.7 yards per catch, two TDs in four games in 2024), who lined up at wideout on 93.0 percent of his snaps in 2024 at UVA.
Those three would be your early favorites to start in the receiver slots in 2025.
The depth chart also has Kam Courtney (12 catches/14 targets, 114 yards, 9.5 yards per catch in 2024) and Suderian Harrison (11 catches/15 targets, 99 yards, 9.0 yards per catch in 2024) competing for playing time.
Area of need: tight end
We can still use some help at tight end, which loses Tyler Neville (37 catches/54 targets, 394 yards, 10.6 yards per catch, two TDs in 2024) to end of eligibility.
The only guy back at TE with game experience is converted wideout Dakota Twitty (10 catches/13 targets, 78 yards, one TD in 2024).
Twitty, a former four-star prep recruit, is a big target (6’4”, 239 pounds) with wideout pass-catching skills, so he’s a solid option.
Some depth at that position would be nice, obviously.
