Women’s basketball: UVA opens ACC play Thursday hosting No. 23 Florida State

UVA women’s basketballThe UVA women’s basketball team (6-7, 0-0 ACC) opens up conference play by hosting Florida State (12-1, 0-0 ACC) on Thursday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m., at John Paul Jones Arena.

Noting the Cavaliers

  • Florida State is ranked No. 23 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and is receiving votes in the Associated Press poll
  • Virginia is 24-16 all-time in ACC openers, including downing Pitt, 62-50, last season
  • Virginia closed out the non-conference slate with back-to-back wins over South Florida and Charlotte, a pair of teams with winning records (USF 9-3; Charlotte 8-3). South Florida was receiving votes in the AP poll at the time of the game
  • After averaging 57.7 points per game in the first 11 games of the season, the Cavaliers have scored an average of 69.5 in each of the last two games
  • Junior Jocelyn Willoughby (East Orange, N.J.) comes into the game with 485 career rebounds, 15 shy of reaching the 500 benchmark. In the last 10 years, seven UVA players have topped 500 career rebounds including Lauren Moses, who finished her career with 748
  • Junior forward Lisa Jablonowski (Ernster, Luxembourg) had the Cavaliers’ second-best shooting performance of the season, going 5-of-7 in her field goal attempts against Charlotte. Only sophomore guard Khyasia Caldwell has had a more efficient game this season when she was 5-of-5 against Coppin St.
  • Jablonowski also had six rebounds against Charlotte, all of them offensive. It was her fourth time this season grabbing five or more offensive rebounds in a game
  • Senior forward Mone Jones was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line against Charlotte. Jones has made her last eight free throws. In the last seven games, she has only missed three attempts. She is currently tied for seventh in the conference with an 86.1 percent efficiency. Jones is 31-of-36 from the free throw line this years. Last season, she only went to the stripe four times, going 2-of-4. Her freshman year, she was 24-of-32 (75.0 percent)
  • Sophomore guard Jocelyn Willoughby (East Orange, N.J.) just missed her fifth-straight double-digit game when she contributed nine points against Charlotte. In the last five games, Willoughby is averaging 15.4 points per game and has moved into the team scoring lead. Willoughby is also the team’s leading rebounder since Felicia Aiyeotan has been sidelined
