The UVA women’s basketball team (2-5) suffered a 91-66 loss at Michigan State (5-1) on Wednesday in an ACC/Big Ten Challenge game played at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Mich.
Sophomore guard Brianna Tinsley (Madison, Va.) scored a career-high 19 points, including going 5-of-9 from three-point range to lead the Cavaliers offense. Junior guard Jocelyn Willoughby (East Orange, N.J.) had her second-straight double-double, scoring 16 points with 11 rebounds.
Michigan State was led by Jenna Allen with 21 points, going 10-of-12 from the field. Michigan State shot 56.9 percent (33-of-58) while Virginia was 25-of-55 (45.5 percent). The Spartans had a 32-28 edge in rebounding.
Michigan State came out hot, shooting almost 60 percent in the first quarter (10-of-17, 58.8 percent) to build up a 25-4 lead. The Cavaliers rebounded in the second quarter, outscoring the Spartans 22-21 in the period, but still went into the break trailing by 20 points. The Spartans opened the fourth quarter on a 10-2 run to put the game out of UVA’s reach.
