Kids go on the air: Thanks to WTJU

AFP

wtjuTune into WTJU’s sister station, WXTJ 100.1 FM – WXTJ.fm – to hear shows this weekend (Aug. 3-5) created by 36 students in grades 3 through 8 who attended the station’s 2018 summer camps for aspiring media creators.

“Our studios have been filled with high-energy young people who produced radio shows ranging from interviews and storytelling to music sets that they curated as DJs,” said station general manager Nathan Moore.

For three weeks in a row in July, staffers guided kids through listening and sound, music discovery, studio tools, and recording and editing. There was a field trip to The Jefferson Theater and Sidetracks downtown, plus a mystery game using radio clues.

In this fifth year of the broadcasting camps for kids, there were three sessions, each lasting five days, with a cap of 12 students per session to ensure a hands-on experience.

“What WTJU is really good at is music discovery and bringing people together through shared music experiences,” said Moore. “It only makes sense that we would extend that mission to include kids in the Charlottesville area. WTJU’s summer camps empower kids to find their voice, tap into the local music scene, and get creative on-air.”

Individual shows are posted at:

ACC Football: Players of the Week for Week 4, with one inexcusable admission

It’s like the select media panel in charge of the ACC Football weekly honors is just messing with us, picking a guy with 14 missed passes to be the QB of the week over another guy who was 24-of-28 with four TDs.

Denver Riggleman leads (Former) Republicans for Perriello rollout

Denver Riggleman is leading a new effort called Republicans for Tom Perriello, though, not trying to be cheeky here, Riggleman is about as much a Republican today as I am. The Perriello campaign for the Fifth District congressional seat rolled out the new voter group on Monday. It wouldn’t have had less cachet, and would...
