Harrisonburg: Retired JMU prof honored for professional achievement, service

Kathleen G. Arthur, a James Madison University professor emerita, received The Award for Exemplary Achievement, the most prestigious award given by the Southeastern College Art Conference, in recognition of personal and professional development as well as longstanding service.

Arthur has served the SECAC, a nonprofit organization that seeks to promote the visual arts in higher education, since 1983 when she was the annual conference program co-chair for art history. She has chaired numerous sessions in medieval and Renaissance art history from 1985 to the 2008 New Orleans conference. She served two consecutive terms as the Virginia representative on the SECAC Board from 1999 to 2005.

Arthur joined the JMU art faculty in 1975. She served as head of the School of Art and Art History’s art history area from 1996 until her retirement in spring 2008. Her scholarship has focused on women artists in the Italian Renaissance and the lives of cloistered nuns in Italy. In recognition of her outstanding research, Arthur was named the 2007-08 Madison Scholar from JMU’s College of Visual and Performing Arts.
