P-Nats top Lynchburg in Game 1 of Carolina League playoff series

p-natsLynchburg only mustered three baserunners in seven innings and fell to Potomac, 7-0, in Game One of the best-of-three Northern Division Championship Series Wednesday night at Pfitzner Stadium. After an hour and 13-minute rain delay caused the game to start at 8:18 p.m., more rain forced the game to be called in the middle of the seventh inning at 11 p.m.

After the game remained scoreless in the first two innings, Potomac broke through with a run in the third and proceeded to score each inning until rain delayed the game in the middle of the seventh.

A Dale Carey triple set up a two-run fourth inning for the Nationals. Potomac added a run in the fifth and three in the sixth. Matt Page highlighted the sixth frame with a two-run double. He scored later in the stanza on an RBI single by Carey.

Boone Whiting limited Potomac to two hits and a walk over seven frames to register a complete game shutout. The right-hander only needed 85 pitches, striking out three in the game. He improved to 5-0 in six starts against the Hillcats this season.

Tyler Krieger reached base twice with single and walk, while Connor Marabell singled to right field in the the third. Marabellstole second base to become the only Hillcat to reach scoring position in the contest.

Lynchburg has lost seven consecutive playoff games dating back to the beginning of the 2013 postseason…The Hilllcats’ last playoff win occurred when Lynchburg won the 2012 Mills Cup Championship Series…After only being shutout once in the first 133 games of the season, the Hillcats offense has been shut out three times in the past eight games.

Lynchburg hosts Potomac for Game Two of the NDCS Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Luis Lugo (8-5, 4.04) will start against lefty Hector Silvestre (0-0, 2.08). Fans can listen to the action on 93.3 FM and 1320 AM as well as www.lynchburg-hillcats.com, beginning with the Hillcats On-Deck Show at 6:15 p.m.
