Maryland artist Sabine Carlson will exhibit “Trees and Helicopters” Aug. 31 – Oct. 9, in the Cleo Driver Miller Art Gallery at Bridgewater College.
An artist’s talk will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, in the Boitnott Room. A reception will follow from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Miller Gallery. The talk, reception and exhibit are open to the public at no charge.
As a painter, Carlson is not as interested in getting the trees and helicopters “right” as she is to get them “in the right place” within the painting. In this exhibit, she looks at the idea of mobility and immobility in very close proximity to each other. “Trees are quite literally stuck in place,” she says, “yet with their branches swaying in the wind, they can appear mobile too.” While helicopters are maneuverable in the air, they can become suddenly immobile and have become a symbol of both power and vulnerability.
In 2007, Carlson received the First Prize Juror’s Award (Jack Rassmussen) “9th All-Media Exhibition,” at Touchstone Gallery in Washington, D.C.
Carlson has had solo exhibits in New York, California and Washington, D.C.
Carlson earned a BFA degree from the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis, and a MFA degree from the University of California at Irvine.
The Miller Gallery is located on the second floor of the Alexander Mack Memorial Library. The Gallery is open 8 a.m. to midnight Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, and 1 to 11 p.m. Sunday.
