Voters, get this, Senate Republicans, trust Barack Obama more than Donald Trump to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court.
Yes, it is hard to believe.
Public Policy Polling has the data from surveys of voters in six swing states, and it’s not even close, except in bright red Arizona, where Obama gets a 46 percent to 45 percent plurality over Trump on the Supreme Court trust issue.
In the other states polled – Iowa, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin – the margin for the president ranges from 9 to 17 points.
On the question of trusting Trump, the presumptive GOP nominee is underwater in each of the six, by margins ranging from 5 to 23 points.
There is overwhelming support in each of the six states for the Senate to begin confirmation hearings on Merrick Garland, Obama’s nominee to replace the late Antonin Scalia, ranging from 38 to 44 points among all voters, and Republicans in four of the six states (the exceptions: New Hampshire and Wisconsin) also backing Senate hearings for Garland.
PPP surveyed these six states because there are vulnerable GOP Senate incumbents running for re-election in each, and voters in each state say in the surveys that they are much less likely to vote for a candidate opposed to Supreme Court nominee hearings.
