DRPT names new Chief of Policy, Communications and Legislative Affairs

drptChris Smith will be joining the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) in the newly-created position of Chief of Policy, Communications and Legislative Affairs.

He will begin his official tenure on January 6th, and will be based in the Richmond office of DRPT.

Smith comes to the Department from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) where he served as the Senior Program Manager for Freight. In that role, he directed all policy, technical service and government relations activities related to multi-modal freight transportation on behalf of state governments.

Smith’s previous experience includes serving as the Vice President of Public Policy for the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce and working in the Florida Legislature. Mr. Smith has an undergraduate degree in International Affairs and a Masters Degree in Public Administration and Policy from Florida State University.
