Unemployment claims down

In the week ending Sept. 19, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 530,000, a decrease of 21,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of 551,000. The four-week moving average was 553,500, a decrease of 11,000 from the previous week’s revised average of 564,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 4.6 percent for the week ending Sept. 12, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week’s unrevised rate of 4.7 percent. Read more

New restaurant debuts in Downtown Harrisonburg

The new Asian-fusion restaurant in Downtown Harrisonburg, Beyond, has become an instant hit with downtown diners, according to Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance.

Since its opening on Sept. 10, word-of-mouth, has filled the restaurant every night with eager customers. Customer Matt Little, a JMU alum, described the scene, “I haven’t seen a single ad for this restaurant, but it’s already so popular! It is clearly the new hotspot for downtown.” Read more

AWASAW gets million-dollar state grant

The AWASAW Regional Artisans and Cultural Center project has been tapped for a $1 million grant from the Community Development Block Grant-Recovery program, Gov. Tim Kaine announced today.

The $22.5 million project is being funded largely from private funding sources – to the tune of $20 million. The million-dollar CDBG-R grant is being matched by another $1.5 million in local and state monies. Read more

Poll: Obama leads potential ’12 GOP foes

A new poll has the seemingly quite politically vulnerable Barack Obama looking OK in a series of hypothetical matchups with possible 2012 GOP presidential hopefuls.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney are at best within hailing distance, down seven and nine points, respectively, in the poll released this morning by Public Policy Polling. Read more

Landes, Marrow to debate tonight in Waynesboro

The News Virginian and NBC29 are cohosting a debate featuring 25th House District candidates Steve Landes and Greg Marrow tonight at 6 p.m. at Kate Collins Middle School in Waynesboro.

Landes, an Augusta County Republican and public relations and marketing professional, is running for an eighth term in the Virginia House of Delegates. Marrow, a Rockingham County optometrist and the Democratic Party nominee, is making his first run for elected office. Read more

Fairfax expansions add more than 300 jobs

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine today announced the expansions of six technology, distribution, and healthcare companies in Fairfax County. ACS State and Local Solutions, Beltway Supply Inc. Coveros Inc., Intec LLC, RightStar Systems and Senior Living.com are expected to create 334 new jobs over the next three years in Fairfax County. Read more

Curren, Bell campaigns struggling to work out details of debate series

Erik Curren and Dickie Bell agreed to a series of four candidate debates a couple of weeks after Bell replaced State Del. Chris Saxman as the Republican candidate in the 20th District race this summer. Remember that? It wasn’t without some controversy between the two, but they agreed.

We’re more than a month past that basic agreement, and still we have nothing on the schedule for a Curren-Bell debate series. I first got wind of this after talking with Curren earlier this week and hearing from him that his campaign had not heard back from the Bell campaign on the debate schedule for more than a week.
