EMU alum receives top peace award
A 2009 Eastern Mennonite University graduate has received top honors in the bi-national C. Henry Smith Peace Oratorical Contest.
Laura C. Cattell, an environmental science and justice, peace and conflict studies major from Honey Brook, Pa., won first place with her speech, “Structural Violence in the U.S. Education System.” She competed against winners from other Mennonite-related colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Another poll confirms gap is closed, but McDonnell still leads
Bob McDonnell’s lead over Creigh Deeds in the Virginia governor’s race in a new Public Policy Polling survey of Virginia voters is at five points, down from a peak of 14 points in the summer and seven points a month ago.
The key factors in the McDonnell lead, according to PPP: his 53 percent-to-37 percent lead among independents and his strength relative to Deeds among their respective party bases. The PPP numbers have McDonnell polling 96 percent of self-identified Republican voters, while Deeds is getting 82 percent of the self-ID’d Democratic vote. Read more

The New Market Rebels are pleased to announce that Corey Paluga has been named Head Coach for the 2010 season. The head assistant under Lucas Jones during the 2009 season, Paluga is currently the head assistant coach at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J.

Holton endorses Deeds for governor
Citing his transportation plan and his record of bringing people together to get results, Virginia’s first Republican governor of the modern era, Linwood Holton, today threw his support behind Sen. Creigh Deeds for Governor.
After greeting commuters at the Clarendon Metro Station in Arlington this morning, Sen. Deeds and Gov. Holton spoke about the need to find a bipartisan solution to the transportation crisis, while protecting other core services such as education. Read more

State announces tax amnesty
Gov. Timothy M. Kaine today helped launch Get Square VA, a program administered by the Virginia Department of Taxation offering amnesty to delinquent taxpayers who pay their back taxes between Oct. 7, 2009 and Dec. 5, 2009. Most delinquent taxpayers, business or individual, may pay back taxes to the state of Virginia during this limited window with no penalties and half the normal interest charges. The Commonwealth aims to collect $48 million during the amnesty period, and funds collected will go into the general fund to support education, health, and public-safety programs. Read more
Perriello pushes middle ground on health reform
Fifth District Congressman Tom Perriello is joining with a group of fellow freshmen Members of Congress in pushing for key changes to the health care reform proposals currently in the House. The group is urging Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer to adopt proposals, including deficit neutrality, interstate competition, tort reform, and the “congressional option,” which largely came from constituent feedback during the August work period. Want to know how ridiculous this has gotten? “DuBose has already confessed on video tape,” a commenter on the News Virginian blog who goes by the handle TakeMeSerious wrote this morning, before clarifying that the information came from “the victim and her family.”
“(T)hey say he’s confessed,” TakeMeSerious wrote, before further clarifying that the information about the “confession” came from “a friend of a friend of a friend of the family of the victim.” Read more
