Groh: Hall will start … at punt returner
Still no word on who Virginia will be starting at quarterback Saturday in the season opener at home against William & Mary. But we do now know that Vic Hall will be returning punts.
“That’s one thing we know for sure, that we will have Vic back there returning,” UVa. coach Al Groh told reporters on Monday.
A ‘different’ Bob McDonnell
I wouldn’t say I’m bothered by what Bob McDonnell wrote two decades ago in his now-infamous master’s degree thesis.
OK, I am bothered by it, personally.
“While the proliferation in the day care industry was created in part by the financial hardships of women fostered by no-fault divorce, it was also stimulated by the private choices of individuals to increase their family income, or for some women, to break their perceived stereotypical role bonds and seek workplace equality and individual self-actualization. Must government subsidize the choices of a generation with an increased appetite for the materialistic components of the American Dream?” is the one that stands out the most to me, when I think back to where I was when he wrote those words in 1989. Shannon is the real deal
Steve Shannon gets it that the attorney general’s office in Virginia is about public safety first and foremost. Ken Cuccinelli, on the other hand, seems more focused on the political end of things.
“He’s not talking in any meaningful way about public safety. He’s talking about the same things that you would talk about if you were running for the legislature,” Shannon said of his conservative Republican opponent Cuccinelli, whose campaign website is spare on details of what he would do in the public-safety sphere, to the point that it contains all of 294 words in a single-page bulletpoint presentation listing an overview of his legislative record. Labor Day weekend at Lime Kiln
The Labor Day concert tradition returns to Theater at Lime Kiln on Sunday, Sept. 6, with Blues, Bluegrass and Barbeque. The evening festival begins at 6 p.m., featuring local blues band Honest Labor, solo blues artist Scott Ainslie, and Brennan Gilmore’s bluegrass band Walker’s Run.
Lime Kiln executive director Kim Renz says this is another way Lime Kiln is working with artists from the area and touring artists to create unique events for the community. “This festival is different than our spring MusicFest in many ways. We have three acts over four hours, and while all three have connections to Rockbridge County, the event also sports a regional and national flavor.”

A Dad’s Point of View | Best friend, or best parent?
We just returned from a boys trip to Vegas. By “boys,” I mean my two boys, who are almost 16 and 13 and me, the oldest of the “boys” (according to my wife). I had to consider, yet again, the dilemma we confront as parents today, with the constant assault on our values and the non-stop sexual and violent imagery our kids face. We can’t fully shelter our kids, but what should be the limits? Read more
Dinner Diva | Lettuce 2.0
Last week we talked about turning over a new leaf—as in dumping the Iceberg lettuce in our lives and going for a truly tasty (and nutritious) salad. If you’ll remember, I was grousing big time about this lackluster lettuce both in the taste and nutrition department. Read more
