Chamber urges local business, industry to comply with new minimum wage
Eye-catching headline there, huh? Kind of akin to, Commonwealth’s attorney urges local residents to comply with murder laws. I wish I was making this up, of course.
“Despite these sobering statistics, Congress has not delayed the impending minimum wage increase. Thus, employers should comply with the new federal rate,” read a memo from the Greater Augusta Chamber of Commerce that was sent to members Thursday afternoon. Read more
Media General shows net profit in second quarter
Media General reported net income for the second quarter of 2009, and while the income number was modest, at $20.6 million for the quarter, it was a number in the black and not $532.2 million in the red like the second quarter of 2008 was for the media conglomerate. Read more
CNBC: Virginia ‘Top State for Business’ again
Gov. Timothy M. Kaine today announced that for the second time during his administration, CNBC has named Virginia its “Top State for Business”. This best-in-the-nation ranking was based on a wide range of factors, from workforce quality to broadband infrastructure, and reaffirms that “Virginia has what it takes to emerge from an economy turned upside down.” Virginia received CNBC’s top ranking in 2007 and was ranked second in 2008. This is the fourth time in the last month that Virginia has received national acclaim as a top place to do business. Read more

Police investigating thefts of laptops from Staunton Wal-Mart
The Staunton Police Department is requesting assistance in identifying several suspects in the theft of four laptop computers valued at more than $3,000 from the Wal-Mart store on Richmond Road.

Bolling camp corrects record on Opportunity Fund
“During her trip to the Valley and as you reported during her stop in Waynesboro, Wagner accused the LG of only recently supporting the Governor’s Opportunity Fund. However, Jody Wagner is dead wrong.”
That was the message to me from Randy Marcus, the chief of staff for Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, pulling double duty in the political realm in an e-mail to me over the weekend raising issue with the contentions of Democratic Party lieutenant-governor nominee Jody Wagner that Bolling is a Johnny Come Lately on the need for increased funding for the Governor’s Opportunity Fund.
