Today’s Agenda

Today is the day – the inauguration of the 44th president of the United States is today at noon. The Augusta Free Press is here in the Valley to bring you the reactions of locals to the historic swearing-in of Barack Obama. We’ll be reporting throughout the day from Waynesboro, Staunton, Harrisonburg and places in between. Check back this afternoon to catch a Videocast from the event that we’re cohosting in Waynesboro. (And of course we’d love to see you there!)

Chris Graham | Barack

It’s Jan. 20, 2009. We’d be celebrating today no matter who was taking over mainly because of the fact that the other guy would be on his way out the door. Maybe I’m not being entirely original in thinking and saying that, but it’s true.
That out of the way … Read more

David Cox | The strategy of hope

“Hope is not a strategy.” So said Chuck Barger, quoting an Air Force maxim, as he introduced officials speaking at Jan. 6’s community breakfast. How right he is.
In my last column, I wrote of the hope that surrounds and infuses us, despite realities that became all too local with the closing of the truck terminal in Rockbridge County and the loss of 100 jobs. True hope takes into account the facts of life that surround us, while looking ahead and beyond them to the vision of what might realistically be. Read more

Media expert-turned-pastor to speak at EMU

The FlyLady | The perfectionism monster

Perfectionism is like a monster with hundreds of tentacles, and it reaches into every part of our lives and holds on ’til we can find it and rip it out. The only problem is that if there is the least little bit left, it will fester till it tries to take over your life again. I find little vestiges of my perfectionism almost every single day. It is a neverending process to eliminate this from my thinking; much like decluttering. I have to nip them in the bud before they take over. See, in my perfectionism I want to rip out every single bit of it; but I can’t because I don’t know where it is hiding. The trick is to be aware of its signs. Read more

Saxman offers proposal to keep CCCA open

State Del. Chris Saxman has a plan for keeping the Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents open.
“The Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents serves a critical role for children and families in the Commonwealth, and that is why we are doing everything we can to see that this resource remains open” said Saxman, who is introducing a budget amendment to restore the $6 million in funding for the Staunton-based Commonwealth Center, a 40-bed mental-health facility that provides mental-health services to children and adolescents who by and large are not able to get those services from private-sector providers.
