Wizards to hold preseason camp at VCU

The Washington Wizards announced that the team will conduct their 2009 training camp at the Siegel Center on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond for the sixth consecutive season.

In addition, the Wizards will host the Memphis Grizzlies in preseason action on Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. at the Siegel Center.

“We’ve enjoyed the first-class facilities and hospitality at the Siegel Center over the last five years, so we’re very excited to return for training camp and officially begin the preseason there this year,” said Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld. “The preseason game will be a great way for us to conclude camp and give our fans in the Richmond area the chance to see the beginning of this new era of Wizards basketball.”

The game on Oct. 6 will mark Washington’s first-ever preseason contest at the Siegel Center. Previously during Washington’s last five training camps on the campus of VCU, the Wizards concluded camp with an intrasquad scrimmage that was open to the public.

“We’re thrilled to be able to host the Wizards and Memphis Grizzlies for an NBA preseason game,” said Tim Lampe, Director of Facilities and Siegel Center Operations. “We have been able to generate significant interest and excitement in Richmond for the Wizards with their annual open scrimmage at the end of their training camp in recent years, so we’re extremely excited to be able to host an actual Wizards preseason game at our great facility.”

A full schedule of practice dates, times and media availability sessions during training camp will be released at a later date.
