A vetting of statewide candidates for the lieutenant governor and attorney general nominations fro the Republican Party in the 2013 elections conducted by the Virginia Tea Party Patriots Federation and Middle Resolution PAC led to the groups endorsing Corey Stewart for lieutenant governor and Mark Obenshain for attorney general.

Before I criticize the lack of action on the part of the U.S. Senate on modest gun measures last week, I will freely admit that the Virginia General Assembly is clearly in the clutches of the National Rifle Association (NRA).

If the United State Congress were to allow the citizens of Puerto Rico to choose between independence and statehood, an overwhelming majority (70 percent) would choose statehood, with 14 percent opting for independence and 13 percent undecided, according to a Suffolk University/Universidad del Turabo poll of 601 likely voters in Puerto Rico.

Today U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) and Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) introduced the Troop Talent Act of 2013. The bipartisan bill will help ease the transition of servicemembers from active duty to the civilian workforce by improving the alignment of specialty skills acquired in the military with civilian credentials or licenses required for post-service employment.

The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank and two of its members (or partner agencies) are competing for a total of $85,000 in grant funding through Walmart’s nationwide Fighting Hunger Together campaign. The two Food Bank members competing for the grant include Hope Distributed, a food pantry in Harrisonburg, and Campus Kitchens, a food distribution program in Lexington. All of the grant funding will support their child hunger-relief programs.

Cold Fusion has been on sabbatical due to the brief illness and eventual passing of my mom on January 14th. I started back up writing a few weeks ago and posting on my website’s blog – www.chrissaxman.com; however, my Cold Fusion emails were very special to mom. She reviewed every one of them before I hit send. Like just about every son, I didn’t take all of her edits, but I soaked up her praise.

By one vote, the United States Senate was able to pass its first budget in four years. The 50-49 vote includes $1 trillion in new revenue by closing some tax loopholes on the wealthy. The passage is largely symbolic, since the vote was for a non-binding resolution that will no doubt clash with the budget resolution to be passed by the Republican-majority House of Representatives.

The ACLU of Virginia and more than a dozen other groups concerned about voting rights today sent a letter to Governor Bob McDonnell urging him to veto legislation that imposes stricter identification requirements at the polls, which the groups expect will limit eligible voters’ access on Election Day.
