WVPT/PBS to send lucky winner on Downton Abbey tour

Downton Abbey, the most-watched drama series in the history of PBS, will now be even more memorable for WVPT, its viewers and one lucky Virginia resident. WVPT/PBS is holding a raffle for “The Spirit of Downton Abbey Tour”—a $5,400 value—which the winner and one companion will experience in England September 1-7.

Salem Red Sox defeat Wilmington, 7-3

The Salem Red Sox scored the final seven runs to win their third straight over the Wilmington Blue Rocks, taking three out of four in the series with a 7-3 triumph on Thursday night. Mike Augliera tossed seven strong innings to improve to 3-0 on the year, while the offense erupted late to overcome the early three-run deficit. Sean Coyle homered for the second straight night, while Garin Cecchini continued his red-hot stretch by reaching base three times.

Highland Transportation Grant Funded Travels

Two groups from Highland County recently enjoyed outings provided under the Department of Rail and Public Transportation grant funding. On Tuesday, April 2, a van full of women from the Highland County Chapter of the Red Hat Society and the Highland Garden Club took a trip to Charlottesville, Virginia, to see the “Carot to Cezanne” art exhibit. Before visiting the exhibit, the ladies ate lunch at The Old Mill Room at The Boar’s Head Inn. Fun was had by all, and they’re looking forward to the next trip!

U.S. Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) today was appointed Chairman of the Competitiveness, Innovation, and Export Promotion Subcommittee by Senate Commerce CommitteeChairman Jay Rockefeller (D-WV). The subcommittee works to strengthen U.S. competitiveness by promoting trade, investment, innovation and manufacturing.

Staunton Downtown Development Association hosts Todd Barman from the National Trust Main Street Center

On Wednesday, May 1 through Friday, May 3, Todd Barman, sponsored by Virginia Main Street will visit Staunton to tour the Downtown Service District and host a variety of meetings with the SDDA stakeholders, Economic Development Committee, Board, and economic development partners to evaluate the District and do some strategic planning and education about succession planning for business owners and trainers.

Through Bike Month, New Community Project’s Northend Greenway, the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC), and the City of Harrisonburg are encouraging community members of all age levels to bike more often, noting it’s a greener, healthier, and less expensive form of transportation.
