Report: Homeless rate down 8 percent in Virginia

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced today the state is making significant headway toward the goal of reducing statewide homelessness. Citing data collected by local Continuum of Care groups across the Commonwealth, compiled by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development and the Virginia Coalition to End Homelessness, the governor announced that overall homelessness has declined 8 percent from 2010 to 2012 and for families the reduction has been even more pronounced, an 11 percent reduction. Additionally, there has been a drop of 36 percent in the number of people experiencing chronic homelessness in Virginia.

WWE brings troop tribute to Virginia

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced Monday that WWE will bring its 10th annual holiday salute to the United States Armed Forces, WWE Tribute to the Troops presented by Slim Jim, to Virginia this December. The 10th anniversary holiday extravaganza will air as a two-hour television special on Wednesday, December 19 at 9/8C on USA Network and as a one-hour television special on Saturday, December 22 at 9/8C on NBC.

Richmond Raiders add to roster, staff

Even though the start of the Richmond Raiders’ fourth season is five months away, the team continues to work hard to assemble a squad that can improve on 2012’s PIFL runner-up finish. Fifty-seven hopeful players looking to be part of the 2013 roster participated in Saturday’s open tryout at the Richmond Coliseum, and a number of them at all positions made an impression on Raider head coach James Fuller.

New local company announces wrestling mega-event

Top Rope Promotions announced this week that it will stage its first wrestling extravaganza on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013 at the Anderson Coliseum at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Va. The main event features former WWE superstars fka Goldust and fka “The Masterpiece” Chris Masters. The tag-team main event pits “The American Patriots,” “Hacksaw Jim Duggan and Michael Hayes, against “The Brotherhood,” Daivari and Mohammad Akbar. TNA Knockouts champion Tara will defend her title against former WWE Diva fka Katie Lea Burchill. Micro Championship Wrestling champion Meatball will defend his title against former MCW champ Short Sleeve Sampson.
