Virginia head football coach Mike London announced on Saturday the hiring of long-time college coach Larry Lewis as the Cavaliers’ special teams coordinator and running backs coach. Lewis replaces Jeff Banks, who joined the UVa staff on Jan. 1 before resigning last week to pursue another coaching opportunity.

The 2013 Session of the General Assembly began on an unseasonably mild January 9. This is the short session, meaning that the legislature will be in session only 46 days. Adjournment is scheduled for the 23rd of February. We are charged with adopting amendments to the 2012 – 2014 budget and dealing with over 2000 bills. Needless to say, it will be a busy session. It has been my experience that delegates and senators try to do as much work in a short session as in the longer 60-day session.

The 2013 General Assembly session convenes at noon on Wednesday, January 9. Tracing its beginnings to the colonists meeting in the church at Jamestown to conduct their common business, the General Assembly is the oldest continuous legislative body in the western hemisphere.

A Muslim scholar from Iran is teaching at Eastern Mennonite University this academic year as part of a new three-year visiting scholar series. Amir Akrami, from the Iranian Institute of Philosophy in Tehran, is teaching two courses during the spring semester 2013 – “Introduction to Islam” and “Issues in Islam.”

A conference and continuing education opportunity that explores substance abuse prevention and treatment methods will be held at Bridgewater College Jan. 26 from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. in Bowman Hall.

The nation’s leading education journal today ranked Virginia as fourth in the nation in overall educational quality and performance. Education Week’s Quality Counts 2013 report awarded the Commonwealth a letter grade of B; only Maryland — with a B+ — earned a higher overall letter grade, although Massachusetts and New York also received B’s. Virginia also earned a B and was ranked fourth in the 2012 Quality Counts report.
