There was something old-fashioned and even spiritual about selecting the time of one’s own death and then inviting friends over. I have learned a lot about life, love, and death from the Day of the Dead and Nearings’ passage over thirty years ago, as well as from other death experiences. Death can be a teacher, if one moves beyond denial into acceptance—harder in some cases than others. A death awareness movement seems to be growing and takes various forms.

The 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame class is set, and it’s hard to argue with the voters for adding Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and Frank Thomas. It’s not hard to argue the notable omissions: Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens. And then I throw Pete Rose in there though he’s not on the ballot and can’t be until baseball does whatever it needs to do to reinstate.

Bob McDonnell today announced that his FY 2015/2016 budget will include $582.6 million in increased funding for the biennium for K-12 and pre-kindergarten education.

The State Board of Elections voted unanimously Monday to certify Democrat Mark Herring as the winner in the hotly-contested state attorney general race. Herring defeated Republican Mark Obenshain by 165 votes out of the more than 2.2 million votes cast in the Nov. 5 election, easily the closest margin percentage-wise in state political history.
